How to price a drywall job

Drywall is priced on board square feet, but the money is made or lost in finishing.

1. Pick the sheet that cuts your seams

Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints to finish. On 9-foot walls or long runs, 4x12 sheets usually save finishing time even if they're harder to handle.

2. Price hang and finish separately

Hanging is priced per sheet. Finishing is priced per square foot and goes up with the finish level. Level 5 under smooth, glossy paint takes far more mud and time than Level 4.

3. Don't forget the small stuff

Corner bead, screws, tape, lift rental and haul-off add up. The going-rate check shows if your number is in line with your area.
